Name and Family and all you want to share
Hey There! My name is Drew Peabody and I am 19 years old and have worked at Sweetie-Licious for over two years now! Of course I LOVE everything about food; cooking, baking and television. My world revolves around food! I also love music! I have been playing piano for 13 years and was involved in choir and musicals in high school. Singing is great passion of mine. Some other things you may not already know: I?m a twin, I enjoy running, and my favorite color is green! :)
I graduated from DeWitt High School in 2008 after which I went to Lansing Community College for two years. This fall is my first semester at Michigan State!! My major is Hospitality Business and I hope to pursue a career involving two of my favorite things, food and people! GO SPARTANS!!!
Your Favorite Sweetie-licious Pie and/or Baked Goods and Why
Here at Sweetie-Licious, my sweet tooth has grown immensely! I am a huge chocolate and peanut-butter fan, and the treats that usually hit the spot are our Peanut-Butter Buttercream Brownies and our Pretty Peanut-Butter Blossom cookies. But if I am really craving chocolate, nothing does the job like our Divine Double Chocolate Cupcakes! We make a moist chocolate cake (of course from scratch) and top it with a smooth, rich chocolate frosting, but the surprise is the creamy white filling in the middle! Absolutely incredible! That being said I have been known to snag a Cherry Lemon Bomb cookie on my way to class!
Your Favorite Sweetie-licious Memory
My favorite Sweetie-Licious memories always revolve around the holidays! I usually end up singing for everyone on Christmas Eve, which is always special. But last year we all got together as employees and family and celebrated Thanksgiving and Sweetie-Licious?s fourth anniversary, as they fall very close together! It was so nice to enjoy the yummiest food and the closest of friends in a place that we all love and feels like home!
Your Favorite Cooking and Baking Memory
Growing up, I was always surrounded by great food from both of my grandmothers. Watching them cook really inspired me from a young age and I feel so fortunate to have found such a passion this early in life. One of my favorite memories was always the Fourth of July! Nearly everyone on my dad?s side of the family would congregate at my Grandparents house in Houghton Lake and eat for days!!! It always seems like we never stop eating at Grandma Bev?s house. My favorite part is, needless to say, dessert!! Something that I can never forget is when Grandpa would get out the old ice cream maker and us kids would take turn cranking the custard until it was frozen and thick! Then one of my favorite ways to eat our ice cream was always with Grandma?s strawberry preserves or even just plain. Eating that cold, yummy ice cream in the middle of the summer was just heaven as a kid!
Your Favorite Family Recipe to Share, History of Recipe
I wanted to find a family recipe to share with you all, and honestly there are so many to choose from! But in my search one simple and classic recipe stuck out. My Grandmother?s Buttermilk cake is one of my favorite desserts because it is so moist, flavorful and versatile. I am not sure as to where the recipe originated, but it is a mainstay in my Grandma?s kitchen and a family favorite. My copy of the recipe is a yellowed index card with my Grandmothers flawless penmanship and very few instructions.
Buttermilk Cake
- 3/4 cup shortening (1/2 cup if using butter or oleo)
- 1 1/4 cups sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
- 2 cups flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tsp baking powder
- vanilla or lemon flavor
Bake at 350 about 30 minutes.
I seem to remember that it fills a 9 x 13 inch pan nicely. One of the ways this cake is the best, and possibly our favorite way to eat it, is with fresh sweetened strawberries and homemade whipped cream! The most sensational strawberry shortcake ever! Enjoy!
